Barbara Askins, a teacher and mother waited for her two children started school to complete his studies in 1975 chimica.Nel was employed by NASA at the Marshall Space Flight Center to find a best way to develop astronomical and geological pictures taken from space , which were often of poor quality.
His research allowed him to develop a completely new procedure which allowed to detect a lot of information in the images that hitherto were not visible to the eye going far beyond the initial hopes. In 1978 he patented (U.S. patent # 4,101,780 dated 18 July 1978 for a " Method of Obtaining Intensified Image from Developed Photographic Films and Plates .") Method that allowed him to enhance images using radioactive substances. The very positive results led NASA to extend the research in the field of X-rays and the restoration of old photographs.
The patent, yielded the title "National Inventor of the Year" (American inventor of the year) in 1978, title awarded for the first time in a woman.
