Patsy Sherman was born in 1930 in Minnesota. In 1950, after receiving his bachelor's degree in chemistry and mathematics, went to work for the 3M Corporation. The research team working on a military project seeking to create a new latex for jet engines. Incidentally, a lab technician dropped a sample of one of the chemicals experiments on his tennis shoe. Smith had the idea to use a combination of compounds as a coating for fabrics. Sherman and Smith spent more than seven years perfecting the mixture. Scotchguard launched in 1956 and remained the leader in protecting and sealing compounds used on furniture, carpets and fabrics.
